A chilling gust through windows shuttered.
An angry whisper where none could be uttered.
An unseen guest, a slamming door
Unwanted, unpleasant, it flees this floor.
Our nurse, she shivers, but shows no fear.
For only angels linger here.
The staff, they speak of these old walls
How death has often stalked these halls.
And oft they’d find by light of day
That he indeed had found his prey.
But none remain, they say, through tears
For only angels linger here.
She calls each hour, both day and night
I feel your hand in mine squeeze tight.
That wince she puts upon your face.
I long to free you from this place.
But dread not as her hand draws near
For only angels linger here.
Perhaps you’ve seen those TV shows
Of similar halls with lingering woes
Where shadows full of sorrows prowl.
Dear child, please hide that fearful scowl.
These halls hold naught but love and cheer.
For only angels linger here.
Oh darkness, I cannot see a light
Beyond this endless, cursed night!
My hand still holds yours, but you have fled.
Or was that your kiss upon my head?
Perhaps, there’s hope, you’ll stay, my dear.
For only angels linger here.
